The GRAMMY-nominated multidisciplinary artist, whose practice spans music, performance, and visual art, has been expanding her sonic universe since 2010. Born in Barranquilla and now based in Toronto, she first gained widespread recognition with La Papessa , which won the Polaris Music Prize in 2017, before cementing her place as one of the most singular voices in contemporary music with Miss Colombia . Rooted in Afro-Indigenous Colombian traditions, electropop, cumbia, and a DIY punk spirit, her work explores identity, beauty, migration, and belonging through a distinctly personal lens. With Miss Colombia , Pimienta sharpened her blend of cumbia, electropop, dembow, and chamber music into a powerful reflection on Caribbean womanhood and her Wayuu heritage. She later turned toward classical composition with La Belleza , a project born from her ballet composition Lux Aeterna , created in collaboration with choreographer Andrea Miller. The work made history by establishing Pimienta as the first woman of color to compose for the New York City Ballet, while further expanding her artistic practice into new territories. Her latest album, Caribenya , brings together the many threads of her career. Initially conceived as a companion piece to La Belleza , it evolved into a vibrant and deeply personal work blending electro-cumbia, dembow, ambient textures, pop sensibilities, and anti-colonial storytelling. Created alongside a range of collaborators, the album celebrates Caribbean identity, community, and resistance, while embracing the liberating power of the dancefloor. Both joyful and politically charged, Caribenya showcases an artist continuing to push sonic boundaries without ever losing sight of her roots.
