In 1996, we released on CD the recordings of four ‘manifesto’ evenings that took place in New York, Paris, London and Bari. These archives evoked the spirit that has driven Sub Rosa since its earliest publications: that of a laboratory where archives and ongoing research, noise and silence, heritage and the avant-garde intermingle, within the folds and rhizomes of time. Time, in fact, has never been a determining factor in our approach. Predictability even less so. We feel our way between inherited paths and others yet to be invented, reshuffling the deck record by record, year after year, experiment after experiment. We embrace this identity, which is shaped more by questions about the material than by assertions, by sometimes improbable connections rather than by clearly defined territories. This evening at the Botanique revives this intention: to continue the alchemical work between different musical currents, bringing together artists who share a long history with Sub Rosa and others whose paths have crossed ours more recently. Not to take stock, let alone celebrate a story that has come to an end, but to set things in motion once more. It all begins again with BLUTCHINGS (Daniel Denis, Michel Delville, Antoine Guenet), a new trio on the fringes of avant-jazz and prog, who will perform their debut album live; next up will be Ogives, reunited on stage for the occasion, with new arrangements from "La Mémoire des Orages", an album produced by Steve Albini; finally, BOW will present the 3CD box set to be released for the occasion by S.R. And, echoing the 1996 tour, the evening will conclude with live performances by David Shea and Scanner. A reunion is not out of the question. DAVID SHEA A Composer whose work in the 80s and the early 90s were closely associated with the New York downtown new music scenes and his electronic work in the ensembles of John Zorn collaborating with many of the improvisors, dancers, artists and filmmakers in the US and Europe. Studying at the Oberlin Conservatory under Richard Hoffman, Morton Feldman, Randolph Coleman and Conrad Cummings he studied contemporary classical, film music and electronic composition and orchestration. Since the early 90s he began touring extensively with his own ensembles and has focussed on the combination of acoustic and electronic instruments, sampling, sound installations video work and music concrete field recordings. Having created around 80 recordings, he also has written many film scores, dance works, most notably with the Karole Armitage Ballet, and worked with galleries and museums producing sound installations. His Sound Installation work can be heard in the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, The MACBA Museum Barcelona and The Modern Art Museum New York with the score to the installation film -Dial History. After a 3-year period at the research centre IRCAM in the early 2000s he lived in Brussels and began designing electronic instruments as electro-acoustic composition became the core of the work, combining acoustic instruments and new electronic instruments in solo performances and ensemble works. Since 2006 he has focused on the Asian Pacific region and been lecturing at the University of Melbourne and the VCA, teaching and Co ordinating cross-discipline courses. His performances have been featured at Symphony Space, New York, The Tokyo Summer Festival, The Budapest Arts Festival, The Adelaide Festival, The Rotterdam film Festival, ACMI and The Melbourne Film festival, IRCAM’s Agora Festival, The Shanghai Arts Festival, Liquid Architecture, and the Holland festival. David Shea The 55th Birthday Concert SCANNER Robin Rimbaud- Scanner , is a pioneering British composer and artist celebrated for transforming the hidden frequencies of everyday life into music. Emerging in the early 1990s, Scanner became renowned for his innovative use of intercepted mobile phone conversations and found sounds, weaving them into haunting electronic compositions that explore surveillance, identity, and memory. His prolific output spans albums, sound installations, dance, film, and public art, collaborating with artists from Bryan Ferry to Merce Cunningham, Laurie Anderson and Steve McQueen. Continually redefining the relationship between sound and space, Rimbaud’s work invites listeners to tune into the unseen rhythms of the modern world. Scanner - Live @ Synth East Norwich OGIVES OGIVES is a nine‑piece ensemble weaving together chamber music, avant‑rock, vocal polyphony, and electronic textures. Their album La Mémoire des Orages, mixed by Steve Albini, brings orchestral depth into dialogue with the raw urgency of amplified music, shaped by a poetic and immersive sensibility. On stage, the ensemble pairs electric intensity with instrumental precision. The multiplicity of timbres —strings, winds, percussion, riffs, voices, and electronics — creates a dense, shifting sonic ritual that invites deep, attentive listening. La Mémoire des Orages, the group’s debut album released on Sub Rosa, unfolds as a 76‑minute fresco where incantatory vocal polyphonies, abrasive riffs, pure-toned female voices, abstract electronic textures, meditative winds, and entrancing polyrhythmic percussion intertwine. OGIVES explores a contemporary idea of the sacred through an immersive and contrasted musical dramaturgy. OGIVES - Patience (Part I-II) BOW BOW is a Brussels-based string quintet featuring Margaret Hermant (violin), Benoît Leseure (violin), Jean-François Durdu (viola), Marine Horbaczewski (cello), and Cyrille de Haes (double bass). Formed more than a decade ago, the group stands at the crossroads of contemporary chamber music and free improvisation. Their approach is grounded in close listening, patience, and a commitment to collective sound-making. Over the years, they have forged a shared language built on trust, where roles shift fluidly and the music arises from the relationships between the players. BOW has collaborated with artists such as Mélanie De Biasio, Aidan Baker, and Mario Forte, and has contributed to projects released on labels including Sub Rosa, 7K!, Icarus Records, and Cruel Nature. Their work has appeared in a wide range of contexts, from intimate listening rooms to interdisciplinary performances where presence, nuance, and acoustic detail take precedence over genre. BOW is not a conducted ensemble. It is a language, a way of standing together inside sound. BLUTCHINGS BLUTCHINGS marks the long-awaited return to live performance of Daniel Denis, legendary founder, drummer and principal composer of Univers Zero. A key figure in Rock in Opposition, Denis helped redefine progressive music through a singular fusion of chamber music, modern classical influences, jazz and avant-rock, leaving a lasting mark on the international avant-progressive scene. In BLUTCHINGS, Denis joins guitarist Michel Delville, leader of The Wrong Object, and keyboardist Antoine Guenet, a long-time collaborator in both Univers Zero and The Wrong Object. Together they channel the adventurous spirit of Univers Zero into new territory through improvisation, electronics, jazz-rock energy and contemporary sonic exploration. Recorded live and largely composed in the moment, BLUTCHINGS combines tension, mystery and inventiveness with a playful, forward-looking approach.
