Psychedelic folk-rock with pop undertones, carried by dreamy melodies
"Music like Folsom’s, brackish and mystical, is always going to be sought after. It’s naïve, lo-fi, and needfully sincere—a compelling part of the Great American Songbook, whether recognized or not." Matt Mitchel - Paste Magazine Robert Lester Folsom released his debut studio album, Music and Dreams, in 1976. Initially circulated through private pressings, it gained wider recognition when Anthology Recordings reissued it in 2010, introducing a new generation to Folsom’s folk rock wizardry. That same year, Anthology began exploring the Southern singer-songwriter and psychedelic serviceman’s archives, releasing three collections: Ode to a Rainy Day, Sunshine Only Sometimes, and If You Wanna Laugh, You Gotta Cry Sometimes. Born and raised in Adel, Georgia, Folsom developed an early passion for music, reaching new heights after seeing The Beatles’ 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Inspired by the Fab Four, he soon began creating his own music, trading a children’s record player for a guitar. He went on to recruit friends, classmates, and family members for his musical projects. Using ingenious overdubbing techniques with his beloved Sears 3440 two-track reel-to-reel recorder, Folsom became the go-to producer and arranger for local garage bands and aspiring singer-songwriters. Between 1972–1975, he recorded bedroom demos and informal studio sessions that remained unheard for decades, showcasing inventive arrangements and songwriting spanning light folk, downer pop, country-blues, and other hard-to-classify experiments. If You Wanna Laugh, You Gotta Cry Sometimes brings together scuffed-shoe folk love ballads, slacker anthems, slow-burning crooners, and bluegrass instrumentals, all infused with Folsom’s warmth, wit, and charisma. The collection further highlights his place in the world of rediscovered, independent American folk rock, keeping his music alive for new generations.
